KNOW YOUR RIGHTS
Under the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA), organizing a union is a federally protected right and it is illegal for an employer to retaliate against workers for exercising these rights.
When an employer interferes with these rights, it is an Unfair Labor Practice and violates the NLRA.
Organize or join a labor union of your choosing.
Talk with coworkers in public or in private about improving working conditions and forming a union.
Distribute union literature during breaks, and before and after work in non-work areas (e.g., break room, cafeteria).
Attend union meetings and participate in union activity.
Sign union cards, and sign or distribute petitions.
You Can:
YouR EMPLOYER CaNnOT:
Retaliate or discriminate against, discipline, or fire anyone for supporting or participating in our union.
Forbid anyone from engaging in union activity, including wearing union items such as shirts, pins, badge reels, or stickers.
Ask about your opinion or your participation in our union (including how you vote).
Reduce pay or benefits for supporting our union OR promise rewards or benefits for rejecting it.
Attend union meetings or ask about the content of our meetings.
Document, document, document! Write it down: who, what, when and where. Keep a record.
Speak Up: Ask for clarification about what they think the violation is and write down their answer. Say that discussing working conditions and unionization is “protected concerted activity.”
Stand Together: We are stronger united than we are divided. Educate each other and work together. A law is only as good as it is enforced. Don't let your employer violate your rights.
Reach Out: Talk to coworkers and nurse union organizers. See if anyone else has had the same issue. If you have questions, please contact a nurse organizer, or email organize@seiuwi.org
